Location: At the intersection of Waterman Drive and Ocean Street.

Open to off-leash dog walking: Year round from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Open to the public: 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Notes and considerations:

  1. Bullet There are doggie bags located in the upper park and a trash can, but there are no doggie bags in the lower park so bring one with you before you go into the park. There are no trash cans in the lower part of the park so please carry your trash back to the entrance trash can.

  2. Bullet Bring fresh drinking water for your dog.

  3. Bullet No part of this park is fenced-off, but this is a dead end street area and away from the busy roads. Be aware many people come to park here and eat their lunch in their cars and enjoy the view so there is some traffic.

  4. Bullet There is some water access along the edge of the park. There is also a small beach that can be accessed by a rather steep path through the grass. If you go toward the entrance for the Casco Bay Bridge walkway (also part of the Greenbelt) and turn to your right you will see a small path down the hill. Go down the hill and to the left where you will find a small beach. This beach does require quite a bit of pick up at this time as you can see by the picture below and to the right.

  5. Bullet The upper part of the park is a good place for owners who have limited mobility who need to exercise their dog as it is quite flat with mowed grass and paved paths. There are also benches to rest on and chat with neighbors.

  6. BulletThe lower part of the park has a pier which is available for public use for boats with fee rates posted. The city requires dogs on the pier or floats be on a leash and must not run loose at any time.  The city does not want them jumping in the water in this area or knocking someone else in.

  7. Bullet SoPoDOG organizes trash cleanups in all of the open spaces on the first Sunday of each month. Sign up for an e-mail reminder so you can help.

  8. Bullet Please use bags to clean up after your dog. Please bring a spare to share with another dog walker. Please remember this is public park with many people who use it for many purposes. Everyone has the right to enjoy the open space. Please be a good neighbor and limit noise such as yelling and excessive dog barking, throw out and/ or carry out all trash and keep your dog under restraint as defined in the city’s code of ordinance.

Thomas Knight Park

Sit with a neighbor and enjoy some checkers. BYO checkers, but the board is there already!

This park is in honor of Thomas E. Knight, master shipwright, who with Nathaniel Blanchard in 1850 established a major shipyard at the southeastern end of Portland Bridge. This park was constructed in the spring of 1999.

This open space has a little bit of every thing for everyone, but it does not have drinking water, so bring some for your dog.
